Lanterns: release date, episode count, cast and what we know

The DC Universe is about to get its first big HBO drama. Lanterns, the Green Lantern series from the makers of Ozark and Watchmen, lands next month, and it looks less like a superhero show and more like a slow burn crime mystery that happens to involve power rings. Here is everything that has actually been confirmed.
When does Lanterns come out?
Lanterns premieres on Sunday 16 August 2026 on HBO and HBO Max in the Americas, with most international territories getting it the following day. That comes from HBO Max’s official announcement, and the show has been handed HBO’s flagship Sunday night slot, the one usually reserved for the likes of House of the Dragon and The Last of Us.
How many episodes, and how often?
The first season is eight episodes. HBO has not yet published a week-by-week schedule, but shows in that Sunday slot release one episode a week, and an eight week run from 16 August would carry the season into early October. We will update this post with the full episode table as soon as HBO confirms the individual dates. What is safe to plan around now: no binge drop, this is a weekly appointment.
What is Lanterns about?
The official logline: new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. Small town Nebraska, a dead body, and two space cops who do not particularly like each other. The pedigree matches the pitch: it was created by Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, The Leftovers) and comics writer Tom King, with Mundy as showrunner.
Who is in the cast?
Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan, the veteran, with Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, the recruit. Kelly Macdonald plays the local sheriff, Ulrich Thomsen plays the fallen Lantern Sinestro, and Nathan Fillion turns up as Guy Gardner, the same bowl cut he debuted in Superman. Laura Linney, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan and Jason Ritter round out a cast that is, frankly, stacked for a comic book show.
How it fits the new DCU
Lanterns is part of Chapter One of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe, the same continuity as Superman, Peacemaker season 2 and this summer’s Supergirl. It is the first HBO series of the new era, and Fillion’s Guy Gardner carrying over from the movies makes the connection explicit. You will not need homework to follow the murder mystery, but events here are expected to matter down the line.
