The Rings of Power season 3: release date and what is actually confirmed

Sauron forges the One Ring this autumn. Prime Video has locked the date for the third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and it lands in the middle of November. Here is what has actually been confirmed, and, just as usefully, what has been widely reported but not officially stated.
When does The Rings of Power season 3 come out?
Season 3 premieres on Wednesday 11 November 2026 on Prime Video. That came out of Amazon’s annual Upfront presentation on 11 May 2026 and is stated in Amazon MGM Studios’ own press release, so the date itself is not in doubt.
That is a two year gap from season 2, which arrived in August 2024, and it is the first time the show has moved off a late summer slot.
What is confirmed, and what is not
This is where most coverage blurs the line, so it is worth separating.
Confirmed by Amazon MGM Studios:
- The premiere date of 11 November 2026
- That season 3 jumps forward several years from the end of season 2
- That it takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, with the Dark Lord seeking to craft the One Ring
- J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay return as showrunners and executive producers, with Charlotte Brandstrom again executive producer and director
Reported, but not in the press release:
- An eight episode season
- A four episode opening drop on 11 November, then two episodes on 18 November and a two episode finale on 25 November
The reported schedule is plausible and it fits: 18 and 25 November are both Wednesdays, which is consistent with a weekly Wednesday pattern. But Amazon has not published it, so treat the second list as likely rather than settled until Prime Video says so.
If that schedule does hold, the shape is unusual for the show. Seasons 1 and 2 both opened with three episodes and then went weekly. A four episode opening followed by two week blocks would compress the whole season into a fortnight and a half.
What happens in season 3
The press release is unusually specific about the story, and for anyone who knows the Second Age it is the moment the series has been building towards.
Season 3 is set at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, with Sauron trying to craft the One Ring that gives him the power to bind every other ring bearer to his will and rule Middle-earth. Season 2 ended with the Rings themselves made. Season 3 is about the one that controls them.
Amazon describes the series as jumping forward several years from the events of season 2, so expect a time skip rather than a direct continuation.
How big is this show, actually
Worth a number, because the discourse and the viewing figures have never matched.
Amazon says the series has attracted over 185 million viewers worldwide, that season 1 remains the biggest TV series premiere in Prime Video’s history when measured over its 91 day launch window, and that season 2 sits among the top five most-watched returning seasons the service has ever had. Season 2 also debuted at number one on Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 and stayed in the top four for its entire run.
You can dislike the show. It is not a flop.

How not to miss an episode
A November release lands in the busiest month of the streaming year, and if the reported schedule is right, a two episode drop is easy to miss when it arrives a week after a four episode one and a week before the finale. An irregular pattern is exactly the kind that slips past you.
