The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey: Netflix release date and cast
Netflix has given its most uncomfortable December release a date that is not an accident. The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey streams globally on Thursday 10 December 2026, two weeks before the thirtieth anniversary of a killing that has never been solved.
Here is what Netflix has actually confirmed, and what it has not.
When does The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey come out?
Netflix has set 10 December 2026, and says on Tudum that the series “will stream globally on Dec. 10”. One date, every region, no staggered rollout.
The date itself carries weight. JonBenét Ramsey was six years old when she was killed at her family home in Boulder, Colorado, in December 1996. Nobody has ever been charged. A December release puts the series in front of audiences at the point in the year when the case resurfaces anyway.
How many episodes?
Netflix has not published an episode count, and we are not going to borrow one from a site that has. Several outlets have reported eight. Until it is on Netflix’s own page or in the app, treat it as unconfirmed.
What Netflix does call it is a limited series, which on this service has meant one run of episodes with no second season planned.
Who is in it?
Melissa McCarthy plays Patsy Ramsey and Clive Owen plays John Ramsey. That is the casting decision the whole production rests on, and it is a long way from what either actor is known for.
The full cast Netflix has confirmed:
| Actor | Role |
|---|---|
| Melissa McCarthy | Patsy Ramsey |
| Clive Owen | John Ramsey |
| Emily Mitchell | JonBenét Ramsey |
| Garrett Hedlund | Det. Steve Thomas |
| Alison Pill | Det. Linda Arndt |
| Shea Whigham | Alex Hunter |
| Owen Teague | Shane Edwards |
| Clifton Collins Jr. | Det. Tom Trujillo |
| Angus Caldwell | Burke Ramsey |
| Jaime Ray Newman | Amelia Hunt |
Recurring: Rory Cochrane as John Eller, Chris Bauer as Chief Tom Koby, Will Patton as Lou Smit, Jeremy Bobb as Pete Hofstrom, John Billingsley as Santa Bill McReynolds, and Josh Stamberg as Reed Hunt. Margo Martindale and Tzi Ma guest as Nedra Paugh and Dr. Henry Lee.
Who made it?
Richard LaGravenese is the showrunner and executive producer. Harrison Query and Tommy Wallach co-wrote it, and also executive produce. Anne Sewitsky directed and executive produces. McCarthy executive produces as well, which tends to signal an actor who went after the part rather than one who was offered it.
It is produced by 101 Studios, with David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari and David Hutkin executive producing for the studio.
It was not made for Netflix
This is the part of the story worth knowing before you watch.
The series was commissioned by Paramount+ and finished shooting in early 2025 under the title Unspeakable: The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey. After the Paramount and Skydance merger, the new owners chose not to release a show that was already complete. Netflix picked it up in July 2026.
Finished television that a commissioner declines to air is rare, and it usually means somebody got nervous rather than that the work was poor. Netflix clearly disagreed enough to buy it and give it a date within months.
How Netflix describes it
Netflix calls it a limited series that “explores one of America’s most scrutinized unsolved murders”, and says the story is “Told from multiple angles, the series unravels the speculation and unresolved grief”.
That phrasing is doing real work. “Multiple angles” and “speculation” are how you describe a drama about a case where the public settled on a theory the evidence never supported. No charge has ever been brought against anybody.
Frequently asked questions
What date is The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey released?
Thursday 10 December 2026, worldwide, on Netflix.
Is it a documentary?
No. It is a scripted drama with actors playing the real people involved. Netflix released a separate documentary, Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey, in 2024.
Are all episodes released at once?
Netflix says the series streams globally on 10 December and has not announced a weekly schedule. Its limited series almost always arrive in full, so expect everything on the Thursday, but that is precedent rather than confirmation.
What time will it be available in the UK?
Netflix normally releases at 00:01 Pacific Time, which is 08:01 in the UK in December. Set a reminder for Thursday morning rather than Wednesday night.
Has the case been solved?
No. The murder remains unsolved and no one has been charged. Boulder Police have continued to treat it as an open investigation.
Where else can I watch it?
Netflix only. It is not on Paramount+ despite having been made for it.
Put it in your list now
A limited series with one release date is the easiest kind of thing to miss, because there is no weekly rhythm to remind you. Follow it in TrackShows and turn on episode alerts, and the notification arrives on 10 December without you having to hold the date in your head for seven weeks.
If you are filling out December, Pride and Prejudice lands on Netflix the same month.
